Children Do Not Always Need Perfect Parents

Children Do Not Always Need Perfect Parents

When you have children, you quickly understand one simple thing: being a parent does not mean always knowing the right answer. There is tiredness, nerves, mistakes, difficult conversations and days when you simply do not have enough strength. But children often need something else more: love, their own people at home and the feeling that the family is still there.

Children Do Not Always Need Perfect Parents

In a family, things do not always go calmly. Parents also get tired, can lose patience, make mistakes, use the wrong words and think about it later. But with time, I understand more and more: children do not need parents without mistakes. They need parents who love them, stay close and try not to lose connection with them.

In short

This is not a text about how to raise children correctly. I am not a psychologist and I am not teaching anyone how to live. These are just the thoughts of a father who also gets tired, sometimes makes mistakes and learns to see family not as a picture, but as living people.

When you become a parent, at first it feels like you have to do everything right. Be calm. Patient. Attentive. Always know what to say. Always understand what the better decision is.

But real life shows very quickly that it does not work like that. Everyone in a family is alive. Everyone gets tired. Everyone has different moods. And parents also cannot be equally calm, strong and right every single day.

Parents are ordinary people too

It is easy to forget this.

When you are a parent, it feels like you have to hold everything together. Earn money. Solve problems. Help the children. Support your wife. Think about the future. Hide your tiredness.

But inside, you still remain a person.

You can sleep badly. You can worry. You can not know how to answer in the right way. You can say something sharper than you wanted. You can sit later and think: I should have said it differently.

And this does not mean that you are a bad father. It means you are alive.

What children often need more

  • When parents are nearby
  • When it is possible to talk at home
  • When a child is heard
  • When there is a feeling of family
  • When it is possible to make peace after an argument
  • When love does not disappear because of mistakes

Children do not live by our expectations

We adults often create very high demands for ourselves.

As if home should always be calm. As if we should always speak in the right tone. As if children should see us only strong. As if there should be no tiredness, misunderstandings or hard days in a family.

But family is not a picture.

Different things happen at home. Someone did not sleep enough. Someone got hurt. Someone answered in the wrong way. Someone closed themselves off. Someone wants attention exactly when you have no strength left.

And maybe the important thing is not that this never happens. The important thing is what we do after it happens.

Sometimes the most important thing is simply to be close

The older the children get, the more I think that they do not always need our long explanations.

Sometimes they need to be heard.

To be able to come closer. To tell something. To ask a strange question. To complain. To sit quietly nearby. To be in a bad mood and not immediately get a lecture for it.

A child may not always say directly that they need support. But they feel very well whether there is a place at home where they can return with their thoughts.

01

Do not play a role

Parents do not have to pretend that they always know everything. Sometimes an honest “I am also thinking how to do this better” sounds more human than a ready answer.

02

Stay close

Being present does not always look like a serious talk. Sometimes it is just time, attention and the willingness to hear your child.

03

Come back to the conversation

If something went wrong, it is important not to pretend that nothing happened. Sometimes you need to return to it and talk calmly.

Every child is different

When there are three children in the family, this becomes very clear.

One child can immediately say what is bothering them. Another stays silent and keeps everything inside. The third comes closer, hugs you, asks something small, but in reality just wants attention.

And you cannot speak to all of them in the same way.

Someone needs more explanation. Someone needs time. Someone does not need to be pushed with questions. Someone just needs you to sit nearby.

This is also part of parenting: to see not “children in general”, but each child separately.

It is not always possible to stay calm

I will not write that everything in our family is always smooth.

There are days when everyone is tired. There are conversations after which you want to rewind time and say it differently. There are moments when you understand: I went too far here.

Before, I thought a father should simply not allow such moments.

Now I think differently. It is important not only to avoid mistakes. It is also important to admit when you were wrong and not turn it into a tragedy.

It is also important for a child to see that an adult can make a mistake, but after that does not disappear, does not shut down and does not pretend that everything is fine.

Home is not a place where everyone is always right

For me, home is becoming less about order and less about everything looking good.

Home is a place where people know you in different states.

Tired. Happy. Annoyed. Silent. Funny. Serious. Not always collected.

And still accept you as one of their own.

I want my children to feel this at home: you do not have to play a role to be loved here.

After moving, family feels even more important

When a family moves to another country, many things change at the same time.

Language. School. Friends. Everyday life. Habits. Work. Plans. The feeling of tomorrow.

And children go through this in their own way too.

They may not always speak about it directly. But changing country, school, language and environment does not pass by them.

In such moments, you see especially clearly how important it is for home to carry the feeling: we are together. We will figure it out. We are not strangers to each other.

Parenting does not come with a ready instruction

It would be easier if every parent received a clear plan.

In this situation, say this. Here, stay silent. Here, hug. Here, be firmer. Here, give more freedom. Here, do not rush with conclusions.

But there is no such plan.

We learn already in the process. And often we understand something not before the conversation, but after it. Not before the mistake, but after it. Not before the hard day, but when it has already passed.

Maybe this is also a normal part of family life.

Children need to feel that love does not depend on mood

There are different moods in a family.

Someone can be irritated. Someone can be sad. Someone can be closed. Someone wants attention. Someone is simply tired.

But it is very important for children to feel that even on such days, love does not disappear.

You can disagree. You can argue. You can be unhappy with behavior. But at the same time, a child should not feel that because of this they became a stranger.

This is not easy. But maybe this is where real family closeness begins.

I am also learning to be a calmer father

With the years, I look at parenting a little differently.

I want to control less. Prove less. Get nervous less over small things. Listen more. Watch more. See more often that behind a child’s behavior there is often something deeper.

Sometimes behind a sharp answer there is tiredness. Behind silence - hurt. Behind a difficult reaction - a need for attention. Behind stubbornness - a wish to be heard.

I do not always see this right away. But I want to learn to see it more often.

A family is not held together by everyone always being right

A family is held together by something else.

By people coming back to each other even after a hard day. By the possibility to talk. By the possibility to ask for forgiveness. By the possibility to start the conversation again.

Not always immediately. Not always beautifully. Not always the way we would like.

But if there is a wish in the family to hear each other, that is already a lot.

Children do not need a performance

I do not want my children to see only a “correct picture” at home.

I want them to see real life.

To understand: people can get tired. They can not know the answer. They can make mistakes. They can make peace. They can change. They can learn to speak better.

Maybe this is even more important than showing yourself as a parent who never has weak moments.

The main thing is not to lose connection

Children grow quickly.

At first, they are always nearby. Then they have their own friends, their own thoughts, their own secrets, their own worries.

And at some point you understand that the connection with a child does not hold by itself.

It needs to be protected. Not with big words. But with ordinary attention. Conversations. Time. Respect. The willingness to listen even when you do not agree right away.

Maybe children need their own people most of all

Not parents who never make mistakes.

Not parents who always say the right words.

Not parents who can answer every question.

But their own people.

Those they can come to. Those who will not turn away because of a mistake. Those who can be tired, but still love. Those who try, even when they do not always manage.

Children do not need parents without mistakes

They need parents who love. Who are close. Who try. Who can make a mistake, but do not disappear. Who after a hard day still remain family.

Maybe this is what children remember the strongest: not that everything at home was always right, but that at home there were their own people.
