It Is Scary To Start Something New. But It Is Even Scarier To Change Nothing

Starting something new is almost always scary. Because you do not know what will happen next. You do not know if it will work. You do not know how other people will react. But if you change nothing, everything will stay exactly as it is now.

It Is Scary To Start Something New. But It Is Even Scarier To Change Nothing

I think many people do not start something new not because they do not need it. They do not start because they are scared. Scared to make a mistake. Scared to look funny. Scared to hear: “Why do you need this?” But at some point, you begin to understand: if you are always afraid, life will keep standing in the same place.

Short version

This article is not about being very brave. I do not think life works like that. Being afraid is normal. But when fear controls your decisions for years, you may never try what you have wanted for a long time.

I know this feeling very well.

When there is a thought inside: “Something needs to change”.

But right after that, another thought appears: “What if it does not work?”

And that is it. A person gets stuck.

You seem to want it. You seem to understand that the old version no longer really fits. But taking the first step is still hard.

Because something new is always a little scary.

Even if it is something good. Even if you want it yourself. Even if you have been thinking about it for a long time.

Fear often hides behind reasonable excuses

It rarely says directly: “Do not do it”.

More often, it sounds different.

“I will start later”.

“First I need to prepare better”.

“Now is not the right time”.

“Other people are already far ahead”.

“I still need to think everything through”.

Sometimes these thoughts really make sense.

But sometimes it is just fear dressed in normal words.

Because honestly, the perfect moment may never come.

What we are often afraid of

  • That it will not work
  • That it will be embarrassing
  • That people will not understand
  • That it is already too late
  • That we need to start perfectly
  • That we will have to change old habits

I was scared too

When I started building this website, I did not feel like I knew everything.

Quite the opposite.

I had many doubts.

Will anyone be interested in this? Will anyone read it? Will I be able to write in a way that truly sounds like me? Will it look strange?

But then I understood one simple thing: if I wait until I am no longer scared, I may never start at all.

So I started.

Not perfectly. Not with all the answers. Not with a full understanding of how everything will work later.

I simply started taking the first steps.

I already wrote about this in the article “While There Is Inner Movement, We Need To Act” . Because sometimes it is important not to talk away the desire to change something, but to turn it into action.

The hardest part is not starting. The hardest part is admitting that you do not want to keep living the same way

I used to think that the hardest part was taking the first step.

But now I think the hardest part is something else.

The hardest part is honestly telling yourself: “I do not want everything to stay the same”.

Because after that, it becomes harder to pretend that everything is fine.

If a person lives on autopilot for years, they can get used to it.

Work. Home. Tiredness. Phone. Weekend. And then the same thing again.

And then a quiet thought appears inside: “Is this really how it should be?”

And this thought can become the beginning of change.

We often wait for someone to allow us to start

I think many people, somewhere deep inside, wait for permission.

Permission to change. Permission to want more. Permission to try something new. Permission to step out of an old scenario.

But in adult life, no one will come and say: “That is it, now you can”.

At some point, you have to tell yourself: “I will try”.

Even if it is scary. Even if not everything is clear. Even if not everyone supports you.

01

Do not wait for fear to disappear

It may not disappear right away. But that does not mean you cannot take the first step.

02

Start small

You do not need to change your whole life at once. Sometimes one small step already changes your inner state.

03

Allow yourself to learn

First attempts are rarely perfect. But without them, there will be no next attempts.

Very often, the thought “what will people say?” stops us

I think this is familiar to many people.

What will people I know say? What will relatives think? What if someone laughs? What if they do not understand?

But the truth is, people will say something anyway.

If you start, someone will say one thing.

If you do not start, someone will say another thing.

If it works, people will talk too.

If it does not work, people will talk too.

But you are the one who has to live your life.

Fear does not always mean you should stop

I do not think fear is always bad.

Sometimes it simply shows that something matters to you.

If you do not care, you often do not feel afraid.

But if something moves inside, it means there is something alive there.

A desire. Hope. A thought: “What if it works?”

And it is very important not to silence that thought too quickly.

I do not want to one day tell myself: I was simply afraid

I do not want to look back many years from now and understand that I never tried many things.

Not because I did not want them.

But because I was afraid.

Afraid to start. Afraid to make mistakes. Afraid of other people’s opinions. Afraid to look different from what others expected.

Because life passes very quickly when you are always waiting for the right moment.

New things rarely begin beautifully

First steps often look uncertain.

The first text may not be exactly how you wanted it.

The first conversation may feel awkward.

The first attempt may not bring the result you expected.

But that does not mean you should stop.

Because a new path rarely begins beautifully. It often begins a little messy, a little uncertain, but honestly.

And then, if you do not quit, it starts getting better.

I want to show my children that starting is not something to be ashamed of

I often think about children.

What do they see? What example do we give them? What will they remember?

I do not want them to think that adult life is only work, tiredness and waiting for weekends.

I already wrote about this in the article “I Don’t Want To Live Only From Weekend To Weekend” .

I want them to see something else: an adult can also start. Can learn. Can change. Can make mistakes. Can get up again and move forward.

Maybe fear will walk beside us

Maybe it will not disappear completely.

And honestly, I am no longer sure that it has to disappear completely.

Maybe we simply need to learn to take steps even when it is a little scary.

Not wait until it becomes easy.

Not wait until everyone supports us.

Not wait until we are one hundred percent ready.

But start with what we can do now.

And one more thought

If you are afraid to start something new, it does not always mean you should not do it.

Maybe it is the opposite.

Maybe you are standing near something important.

Because things we do not care about do not usually move us.

And something that can change life is almost always a little scary.

But if there has been a thought inside you for a long time: “I want to try”, maybe it is finally time to take at least the first step.

Fear should not decide everything for us

Being afraid of something new is normal. But it is very important that fear does not become the main manager of your life. Because you can wait for the perfect moment for years. Or you can take a small step now. Not perfect. Not for everyone. Just your own.
