As You Get Older, You Appreciate Down-to-Earth People More
I used to pay more attention to how confidently a person spoke, how they presented themselves and what kind of first impression they made. Now I look at different things: whether they keep their word, how they treat people they do not need anything from, and whether you can relax around them.
As You Get Older, You Appreciate Down-to-Earth People More
When I talk about down-to-earth people, I do not mean people without education, experience, character or their own opinion. I mean people who do not constantly try to appear different from who they really are. They may know a lot, be good at what they do and achieve a great deal, but in everyday conversation they still treat others normally.
As you get older, status, confident words and first impressions matter less. Behaviour, reliability, respect for others and the feeling left after a conversation begin to matter much more.
When you are younger, it is easier to believe someone who speaks well, looks confident and always knows what to say. It makes an impression.
But life gradually shows that speaking well and treating people well are not always the same thing.
With time, you stop looking only at what people say about themselves. You start noticing how they behave in ordinary situations, when they do not need to convince anyone and nobody is watching.
What I mean by down-to-earth people
These are people around whom you do not have to carefully choose every word or wonder whether something you say will later be used against you.
They do not speak down to others. They do not change their attitude depending on someone’s job, clothes, money or usefulness.
They can say: “I do not know”. They can admit a mistake. They can listen without interrupting or turning every conversation back to themselves.
There is nothing dramatic about it. It is simply normal behaviour, although it does not seem as common as it should be.
What matters more with age
- Whether a person keeps their word
- How they behave in small situations
- Whether they know how to listen
- How they treat vulnerable people
- Whether they admit their mistakes
- Whether their attitude changes when there is something to gain
You often see a person clearly in small things
Big words can be prepared. An image can be carefully built. A good impression can also be created.
But small everyday situations often show what a person is really like.
Do they thank someone who helped them? Do they answer a message after promising they would? Do they arrive late without even warning anyone? Are they polite to a person who cannot offer them anything?
Another important moment is how someone behaves when things do not go according to plan. Situations like that can reveal more than months of pleasant conversation.
Appearances impress me less than they used to
Today it is easy to create the right impression. Good photographs. Carefully chosen words. Confident presentation. Stories about achievements.
There is nothing wrong with that. But with age, you understand that an image says very little about how someone behaves in ordinary life.
A person can speak often about respect and still have no respect for other people’s time. They can talk about family and never really listen to their own children. They can speak about honesty and quickly change their words when it suits them.
That is why behaviour now matters more to me than a well-prepared story about who someone is.
Some conversations do not leave you feeling worse
There are people who make you replay every sentence afterward. You wonder whether you said too much, whether they understood you correctly or whether you should have stayed silent.
Then there are other people. You speak for a few minutes and continue with your day without carrying extra tension with you.
They may not have said anything remarkable. They simply listened. Answered normally. Did not immediately judge, correct or explain how you should live.
As you get older, this kind of conversation becomes much more valuable.
Words
With time, words matter less when they repeatedly contradict a person’s behaviour.
Actions
Small actions, everyday treatment and promises kept often say much more.
Time
Time shows clearly who stayed close only while it was easy or useful for them.
Being down-to-earth does not mean being weak
Sometimes people confuse simplicity with always agreeing, always giving in and never saying no.
But that is not what I mean.
A person can have a strong character. They can speak directly. They can disagree. They can refuse.
The difference is in how they do it. Do they try to humiliate the other person? Do they become insulting? Do they listen to the answer?
Treating someone normally does not mean everyone has to think the same way.
You see people especially clearly during difficult moments
When everything is going well, being friendly is usually easy.
You see more when a person is tired, irritated, dealing with problems or not getting what they expected.
Some people take it out on everyone nearby. Others can simply say: “I am having a difficult day. I need a little time”.
Nobody behaves well all the time. Everyone has bad days and moments they later regret. But it says a lot when a person can apologise and admit they were wrong.
You notice this even more after moving abroad
When you live in a new country, you become especially aware of how people treat you.
You may not understand a question immediately. You may pronounce a word incorrectly. You may not know how an ordinary situation is handled there.
In moments like these, the difference between people becomes clear. One person becomes impatient. Another repeats the question calmly, explains it in a simpler way or gives you a little more time.
It may be a small thing for them. But someone who is still adjusting to a new country remembers that kind of treatment.
Respect should not depend on usefulness
I have always found it interesting how quickly some people change their tone depending on who is standing in front of them.
With some people, they are friendly, attentive and ready to help. With others, they speak as if simply answering is already a great favour.
That is why I appreciate people who treat different people with the same basic respect. A manager. A neighbour. A shop worker. A cleaner. Someone who does not speak their language well.
It is difficult to fake that attitude for long.
Reliability matters more as the years pass
When you are younger, you can spend a lot of time discussing who is more interesting, intelligent or impressive.
Now it matters much more to me whether I can rely on someone.
If they say they will come, do they come? If they cannot, do they let you know? If they promise to help, do they disappear at the last moment?
These are ordinary things. But trust is built from them. Not from impressive statements, but from what a person does repeatedly.
Children also sense people well
Children may not be able to explain why they like one person and do not want to be around another.
But they notice tone, attitude, tension and insincerity.
They quickly see who is truly listening and who is only waiting for another chance to talk about themselves.
Perhaps adults slowly return to this simple feeling with age. They pay less attention to the image and more attention to how they feel around a person.
Every conversation leaves something behind
After speaking with someone, a certain feeling usually remains.
Sometimes it is calm. Sometimes tension. Sometimes you want to speak again. Sometimes you feel that next time you should keep your distance.
This does not mean we should judge someone after one meeting. They may have had a difficult day. They may have been tired or nervous.
But when the same feeling appears again and again, it becomes difficult to ignore.
Your circle may become smaller with age
Over time, having many acquaintances becomes less important.
What matters more is who those people are. Who you can speak to. Who you can trust with something personal. Who does not disappear as soon as life becomes difficult.
Your circle may become smaller. There is nothing wrong with that.
Having many people around you does not mean there is someone you can actually call when you are having a hard time.
With age, the way people treat others matters more than the impression they make
I care less and less about how impressive someone knows how to appear. What matters more is whether their word can be trusted, whether they keep their promises and how they behave in ordinary life.
These are the people I think of as down-to-earth. Not because their lives are simple or because they lack character, but because they do not need to keep proving that they are better than everyone else.
